How to Ride Your First Electric Dirt Bike

There's never been a better time to start off-road riding. Electric dirt bikes like the Flydone lineup remove the two biggest barriers for beginners: there's no clutch, no shifting, and no stall. You twist the throttle and go. Instant, smooth torque means you spend your mental energy on the trail — not on coordinating a left hand and a foot.

This guide walks you through everything from gear to your first figure-8. By the end, you'll know exactly how to build confidence safely on your first electric dirt bike.

1. Get the Right Gear First

Off-road riding gear isn't optional — it's the difference between a scraped knee and a hospital visit. Start with the essentials:

Gear Why It Matters
Motocross helmet (DOT/ECE certified) Protects your head on impacts and from branches; full-face is best
Goggles Keep dust, roost, and debris out of your eyes
Gloves Grip + protection from blisters and shrubs
Off-road boots Support ankles and shield from the peg and rocks
Body armor / chest protector Guards ribs, spine, and shoulders on falls
Long sleeves & pants Prevents scratches and burns from the motor
Flydone Tip: Start with a certified helmet and boots — those two items prevent the most serious injuries. You can add armor as you ride more aggressively.

2. Know Your Controls

Electric dirt bikes are refreshingly simple. Here's what you'll find on every Flydone model:

  • Twist Throttle: Right grip. Smooth, progressive power — no need to "feather a clutch."
  • Brakes: Right lever = front, left lever = rear. Hydraulic disc brakes on all Flydone models. Many also feature regenerative braking that slows you while charging the battery.
  • Ride Modes: Eco / Normal / Sport. Eco limits power for learning; Sport unleashes full output. Always start in Eco.
  • NFC Start: Tap your card or phone to power on — no keys to lose (available on R8, MT2, MT2 PRO, MT1, and Y18).
  • Display: Speed, battery level, and mode. The MT1 features a large 8.9" TFT screen.

3. Pre-Ride Checklist

Before every ride, spend two minutes on this:

  1. Tires: Visible damage? Correct pressure for your terrain?
  2. Brakes: Squeeze both levers — firm, not spongy.
  3. Battery: Enough charge for your planned session? Seated and locked?
  4. Throttle: Smooth from zero — no sudden jumps when twisted.
  5. Chain/Belt: Tensioned and lightly lubed (mid-drive and hub models differ).

4. Your First Ride: Build Skills Step by Step

Drill 1 — Balance on Flat Ground

Find a flat, empty dirt lot. Power on in Eco mode. Practice rolling at walking speed, then stopping. Get comfortable with where the brakes are without looking.

Drill 2 — The Figure-8

Place two cones (or rocks) 10 meters apart. Ride slow circles around each, then link them into a figure-8. This teaches throttle control and weight shifting.

Drill 3 — Gentle Hills

Find a mild incline. Practice climbing slowly and descending while covering the rear brake. Look where you want to go, not down at your front wheel.

Drill 4 — The Standing Position

Off-road, you stand on the pegs with bent knees, elbows up, hips back. This absorbs bumps and lets the bike move beneath you. Practice standing even on flat ground.

5. Common Beginner Mistakes

  • Too much throttle: Eco mode exists for a reason. Grow into Sport.
  • Looking down: Your bike goes where your eyes go. Look ahead at the path.
  • Sitting too far back: On climbs, shift forward; on descents, shift back. Weight follows terrain.
  • Death-gripping the bars: Relax your arms. Tension transfers to the bike and makes it twitchy.
  • Skipping gear: A $40 pair of boots beats a $400 emergency room bill.

6. Best Flydone Models for Beginners

Where to practice: Empty parking lots, dirt fields, and designated beginner OHV trails. Avoid rocky technical sections until you've mastered Drills 1–4.

Ride responsibly. Always wear protective gear, obey local trail regulations, and ride within your skill level. Flydone recommends professional instruction for new riders.

Model Why It's Beginner-Friendly
Y18 15" fat tires offer maximum stability on loose ground; built-in storage for gear; gentle 4000W hub power
MT1 5000W hub with smooth delivery; big 8.9" display; nitrogen shock for a forgiving ride
MT2 Mid-drive balance; Eco mode is very tame; wheelie assist can be left off while learning
